As I write, it is well past midnight and I am just now crawling into bed for the night. I began the day with new orders for Savannah, GA and by noon I had another set to Orlando. This is crisis response:constant change and adjustment. Part of that is because new needs are assessed, but the biggest part so far is that folks are getting on with their lives and can return home.
Many in Georgia are ready to return home to cities like Savannah and Brunswick. Some will go home to find they cannot live there. Others will be lucky and pick right back up where they left off.
I am now in Orlando to help with Florida recovery. In some places they have wondered why we are here. In others, after over 30 miles of closed interstate exits, we finally find a gas station with partial power and are tearily shown pictures of gas station employee homes with water still half way up their front doors. We may not be needed everywhere, but there is an awful lot of work to do where we are needed.
And that is why I got moved… To meet the needs of the Red Cross in caring for the community. We can only hope the need for us will pass quickly, but I think it won’t anytime soon.
Now I am going to sign off and get some rest. Maybe tomorrow I will get to stay in one city and can share some of what I do.
